Cathie Shipwright made a delivery to the Callington base of the local charity Cornwall and Devon sending love to Ukraine. These items will arrive in time for Christmas.
Jackie Southon, President, joined 90 other volunteers on a sleep out at the Eden Project. Jackie raised £300 for St Petroc's. We heard from the Royal British Legion that £6500 had been raised through the Poppy Appeal. We were very pleased to support them with their collections in Sainsbury's. Evolution ramblers enjoyed a blustery walk at Carn Brea followed by Sunday Roast at the local pub. President Jackie Southon and member John Ball are representing the Rotary Club of Truro Evolution at the Royal British Legion Service of Remembrance in Truro Cathedral on Sunday 12 November 2023.
We had a fascinating presentation from Richard Lingham at our meeting in November. Richard has had an extensive career in health and social care including being a member of the Mental Health Tribunal. His various roles brought him into direct contact with patients at the high security psychiatric hospital Broadmoor. We heard about the facilities and modernisation of the hospital and Richard's direct interactions with patients including Reggie Kray and Peter Sutcliffe. Richard also had contact with Jimmy Saville who was closely associated with the hospital for over thirty years and abused his position of trust there.
Members, Mike Robson and Tony Staveley, were lucky enough to join the volunteer team at the spectacular Tall Ships Regatta that took place in Falmouth between the 15th and 18th August.
Supported by the spirited and tireless coordinator, Heidi Channel, they joined the 120 volunteer team to receive the thousands of visitors to the 12 tall ships that were berthed alongside each other beside County Wharf. With walkie talkie in hand Mike was involved in the safe routing of traffic in the town whilst Tony helped guide and answer questions from visitors arriving and leaving the docks by ferries. Throughout the three days that the tall ships were alongside and with visitors looking around them there was a fun-filled atmosphere to a background of performing ship's crews and sea shanty singing by locals. Tony said "It was a great few days supporting this amazing event. It was also good to see current member Jane and past members Sue, Eve and Claire, on the wharf enjoying an evening out with the Penryn Photography Club busy taking spectacular shots of the ships in the bright evening light." What an amazing time at the Truro BID Children’s day. We had a stand raising funds for Aquabox water filters for Ukraine with a lucky dip. We had sold out of prizes by lunchtime!! Thanks to one of former club members, Alistair Whyte and his family for a final donation, and and excellent hoola hoop demo.
Some of our Members visited the Cornwall Energy Recovery Centre at St Dennis yesterday to find out how 240k tonnes pa of household waste (over and above what gets recycled) is turned into power for 21k homes each year...a fascinating visit.
A very big thank you to everyone who supported our Mid Summer Open Garden and Cream Tea event on Sunday 25th June in aid of Children's Hospice South West. An amazing £460 was raised. The sun shone and the scones had gone!
Following our decision to choose Aquabox as a project that we were keen to get involved in, we decided to organise a presentation to hear about the work of Aquabox and why this project and mission is so important.
The emphasis on the importance of clean water has become evident through recent disasters and conflicts as well as worldwide floods and drought. Having become involved with the local Cornish charity "Sending Love to Ukraine", we decided that, as well as collecting various items of necessity to send out to Ukraine, it was apparent that clean water would be an essential need at the top of the list. We were delighted to have raised funds to send out two Aquaboxes already to Ukraine and we intend to continue to support this essential need and will be focussing on this is a a key project. Please see the linked presentation which will give you an insight into how a few people can do so much important work.
