President Jackie Southon is completing two years as President at the end of June 2024. At our AGM in May 2024 Jackie reflected on the achievements of the previous twelve months - these include raising £1000 for outreach paramedics in Ukraine - an initiative organised by member Brian Budden; bringing together Truro schools for the Youth Speaks debating event - led by Cathie Shipwright; donating £500 to the ShelterBox GAZA appeal, with further donations to Libya and Syria; supporting homelessness through Jackie's sleep out at the Eden Project and collecting waterproof coats, tents and other items for St Petroc's. We have also undertaken a new and innovative project testing the quality of water in the River Kenwyn - an initiative which member Tony Staveley has shared with the District Environmental Lead who was impressed with the work. which we undertake for the Westcountry Rivers Trust. We have delivered Xmas Hampers, helped with the Memory Cafe, collected for the Poppy Appeal, sent donations to local charity Sending Love to Ukraine (including trauma teddies knitted by member Rosemary Ball), supported Children's Day and Volunteers Day on Lemon Quay, helped with Truro Bid City Clean Ups and supported the Friends of Coosebean and Boscawen Park with litter picks. We have also helped at the Falmouth Rotary Climate Emergency event at the polytechnic and marshalled at Falmouth Tall Ships and the St Pirans Day march in Truro. We also represented our Rotary Club on Remembrance Day in Truro Cathedral. Member John Ball organised many of the Evolution Ramblers walks and lunches and we also took part in the 9 mile Exmoor Challenge . We also heard from a diverse and fascinating range of speakers all coordinated by member Fiona Devlin. Members thanked Jackie for her dedicated service and hard work as President - Jackie will be continuing as Treasurer for the club and Cathie Shipwright will take on the role of President. Guide DogsWe were delighted to welcome Liz Hargreaves and her guide dog Fergie to our meeting in May 2024. Liz told us about the extensive training that guide dogs receive and the vital work that they do. One way to support Guide Dogs is to sponsor a puppy - for more information see www.guidedogs.org.uk

Evolution Ramblers enjoyed a 5.5 mile spring walk round Lanhydrock and Restormel Castle followed by lunch at Duchy Nursery Orangery during April 2024.
We look forward to meeting you at Truro Volunteers Day this Sunday (21 April 2024). The aim of this event, which is taking place on Lemon Quay between 11am and 3pm, is to promote volunteering opportunities. We hope to see you there.
April is Rotary Environmental month and to mark this we are highlighting our participation in a water testing project.
We have signed up as Citizen Scientific Investigators working with the Westcountry Rivers Trust. We regularly survey and test three areas of the River Kenwyn to monitor the quality of the water. The aims of the project include producing data to identify degrading waters and spotting pollution events so they can be dealt with as quickly as possible. For more information see wrt.org.uk We were delighted to take part in the Exmoor Rotary Challenge on Sunday 7 April 2024 - it was a great day walking - a bit muddy but the rain held off. We covered 9 miles in total ( it should have been seven but we took a wrong turn!).
Paul Haines, goodwill ambassador for the charity childrenofpeace.org gave us a great presentation at our April club meeting. Paul has completed many pilgrimage walks for peace over the years. His most recent was in Scandinavia. There is so much to learn from his experiences and his talk made us all reflect on Rotary's key area of focus - Promoting Peace.
On his Just Giving page Paul says: During May and June I will be walking for Peace from Tallinn to Riga, Vilnius and then onto Warsaw - a distance of approximately 700 miles. I will spend time in the cities I visit researching for my website www.linkstopeace.org. I will walk wearing signs with information about my walk and a peace flag. I will also carry one of my books in which I ask people to write their message of peace. I will engage with as many people as I can to help raise the profile and awareness of peace in this world. Paul's Just Giving page is at www.justgiving.com/page/baltic-peace-walk-2024-paul-haines Evolution Ramblers enjoyed glorious weather when they visited the Lost Church at Perranporth in March, followed by lunch at the Tywarnhayle Inn.
We were delighted to support Falmouth Rotary with the Climate Emergency event at Falmouth Polytechnic and to join our friends at Stephens and Scown Solicitors on a litter pick at Boscawen Park. Both events took place during March 24.
We had a fascinating presentation from Penny Phillips of Mission to Seafarers at our meeting in March 24. Penny told us how the volunteers provide a social and supportive environment for individuals which includes the opportunity to enjoy spending time in a specially cultivated garden area. Volunteers provide support in many ways including supporting personnel when they are ill or injured which might include visiting them in hospital.
