April is Rotary Environmental month and to mark this we are highlighting our participation in a water testing project.
We have signed up as Citizen Scientific Investigators working with the Westcountry Rivers Trust. We regularly survey and test three areas of the River Kenwyn to monitor the quality of the water. The aims of the project include producing data to identify degrading waters and spotting pollution events so they can be dealt with as quickly as possible. For more information see wrt.org.uk We were delighted to take part in the Exmoor Rotary Challenge on Sunday 7 April 2024 - it was a great day walking - a bit muddy but the rain held off. We covered 9 miles in total ( it should have been seven but we took a wrong turn!).
Paul Haines, goodwill ambassador for the charity childrenofpeace.org gave us a great presentation at our April club meeting. Paul has completed many pilgrimage walks for peace over the years. His most recent was in Scandinavia. There is so much to learn from his experiences and his talk made us all reflect on Rotary's key area of focus - Promoting Peace.
On his Just Giving page Paul says: During May and June I will be walking for Peace from Tallinn to Riga, Vilnius and then onto Warsaw - a distance of approximately 700 miles. I will spend time in the cities I visit researching for my website www.linkstopeace.org. I will walk wearing signs with information about my walk and a peace flag. I will also carry one of my books in which I ask people to write their message of peace. I will engage with as many people as I can to help raise the profile and awareness of peace in this world. Paul's Just Giving page is at www.justgiving.com/page/baltic-peace-walk-2024-paul-haines Evolution Ramblers enjoyed glorious weather when they visited the Lost Church at Perranporth in March, followed by lunch at the Tywarnhayle Inn.
We were delighted to support Falmouth Rotary with the Climate Emergency event at Falmouth Polytechnic and to join our friends at Stephens and Scown Solicitors on a litter pick at Boscawen Park. Both events took place during March 24.
We had a fascinating presentation from Penny Phillips of Mission to Seafarers at our meeting in March 24. Penny told us how the volunteers provide a social and supportive environment for individuals which includes the opportunity to enjoy spending time in a specially cultivated garden area. Volunteers provide support in many ways including supporting personnel when they are ill or injured which might include visiting them in hospital.
For more info see www.missiontoseafarers.org We had a fascinating presentation on the Newquay Wave Project at our January meeting. Newquay is part of a UK wide network of charities working with children and young people who are struggling with their mental health. The trained volunteers provide surf therapy aimed at children struggling with depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts and self harm.
The children show significantly significant improvements in their self confidence, resilience, social skills and ability to build trust with others. Currently 1 in 6 children struggle with their mental health. The Wave Project provides therapy that doesn't feel like therapy. For more information see www.waveproject.co.uk We received a warm welcome when we visited Skinner's Brewery for a tutored beer tasting. A jolly time was had by all.
We helped Friends of Coosebean and Truro's Countryside Rangers to clear rubbish around the Coosebean Cycle Trail and Fairy Doors during February.
Unfortunately fly tipping is rife in some areas away from the cycle path where people have dumped unwanted items such as children's bikes. Overall though the Coosebean Valley is teaming with wildlife and testament to the work of the lots of people under the stewardship of Truro City Council. |
