President Jackie Southon is completing two years as President at the end of June 2024. At our AGM in May 2024 Jackie reflected on the achievements of the previous twelve months - these include raising £1000 for outreach paramedics in Ukraine - an initiative organised by member Brian Budden; bringing together Truro schools for the Youth Speaks debating event - led by Cathie Shipwright; donating £500 to the ShelterBox GAZA appeal, with further donations to Libya and Syria; supporting homelessness through Jackie's sleep out at the Eden Project and collecting waterproof coats, tents and other items for St Petroc's. We have also undertaken a new and innovative project testing the quality of water in the River Kenwyn - an initiative which member Tony Staveley has shared with the District Environmental Lead who was impressed with the work. which we undertake for the Westcountry Rivers Trust. We have delivered Xmas Hampers, helped with the Memory Cafe, collected for the Poppy Appeal, sent donations to local charity Sending Love to Ukraine (including trauma teddies knitted by member Rosemary Ball), supported Children's Day and Volunteers Day on Lemon Quay, helped with Truro Bid City Clean Ups and supported the Friends of Coosebean and Boscawen Park with litter picks. We have also helped at the Falmouth Rotary Climate Emergency event at the polytechnic and marshalled at Falmouth Tall Ships and the St Pirans Day march in Truro. We also represented our Rotary Club on Remembrance Day in Truro Cathedral. Member John Ball organised many of the Evolution Ramblers walks and lunches and we also took part in the 9 mile Exmoor Challenge . We also heard from a diverse and fascinating range of speakers all coordinated by member Fiona Devlin. Members thanked Jackie for her dedicated service and hard work as President - Jackie will be continuing as Treasurer for the club and Cathie Shipwright will take on the role of President. Guide DogsWe were delighted to welcome Liz Hargreaves and her guide dog Fergie to our meeting in May 2024. Liz told us about the extensive training that guide dogs receive and the vital work that they do. One way to support Guide Dogs is to sponsor a puppy - for more information see www.guidedogs.org.uk
