Rotary in Truro are proud to contribute to 100,000 national volunteer hours achievement
Volunteers from the Rotary Evolution Club in Truro have pledged their ongoing commitment to support those affected by the war in Ukraine, as the world marks one year since the conflict began. Over the last 12 months, members from The Rotary Club of Truro Evolution have played their part in responding to the humanitarian crisis by donating funds towards the provision of modular housing in Moschun and arranged a collection event at Truro Sainsbury for World Rotary Day to raise funds towards the provision of Aquaboxes. These activities have been part of Rotary’s efforts across Great Britain and Ireland, which has seen the organisation’s members give in excess of 100,000 volunteer hours and raise more than £6 million of donations in cash and kind. This has included everything from initial emergency fundraising when the conflict first began, through to large-scale humanitarian projects providing lifesaving equipment to new-born babies and building temporary homes in destroyed Ukrainian villages. Closer to home, Rotary has also been focused on supporting displaced families who have resettled to the UK. Jackie Southon, president of The Rotary Club of Truro Evolution said: “The one-year anniversary of the war is a day where those impacted are at the forefront of our minds. “So many millions have suffered over the last 12 months, and we’re proud to have played a part in helping those people and contributing to Rotary’s overall response to the war. “The amount of money Rotary has raised and time our volunteers have given across the country shows the power of collective action and the incredible impact which can come from working together. “Peace is a cornerstone of Rotary’s global mission, and while the war rages on, we continue to be committed to providing help and support wherever we can. “We want to thank the community of Truro area for all their generous support for our activities.” To get involved in Rotary and make a difference in your community, keep checking back here at www.trurorotaryevolution.org Please see link above to donate directly to Aquabox or ask how our club can maximise any donations. The Rotary Club of Truro Evolution has been working on a number of projects, linked to Rotary International’s new area of focus, that of Supporting the Environment. Members have been supporting the work of the Truro City Park rangers from Truro City Council in their work in developing and protecting four areas of woodland and green space in the city.
We have been doing regular litter picks and, in particular have been working with the Friends of Coosebean Woods volunteers. Coosebean Woods is a beautiful area within the City of Truro with a river, woodland and a walkway/cycle path. It is extremely popular with families and has an enchanted trail. This is a trail where there are a number of beautiful fairy doors, fixed into and alongside the trees. They are maintained by the fairy godfather John Rowe. The Park Rangers organise regular wildlife walks and we have helped with tree planting and maintenance and are about to start on river testing. As a Rotary Club we wanted to celebrate the Queens Silver Jubilee so were interested in getting involved with the Queens Green Canopy. So, this led us to making the application to the Woodland Trust. The application process was quite simple, and the delivery arrived as expected. We ordered the working wood pack of 105 saplings, as this included species that we had already planted in the area. When the trees arrived, we delivered them to the Park Rangers at their store and they have been taking care of them. We have already had one planting session and there are a couple more planned. These will include the park rangers, the Rotary club members and the volunteer group. It has been a great example of partnership working to enhance and improve an already beautiful part of the city. It is very rewarding to know that we have all made a contribution to protecting the environment. Cathie Shipwright, The Rotary Club of Truro Evolution |
