We were delighted with the response to a new initiative to collect coats for St Petrocs. Attending Devoran Village Hall in February we collected 13 waterproof coats, a tent and £27 in cash. We plan to be at Devoran Village Hall again on 9 March so please bring along any waterproofs for us then.
We will be running a cake stall at Truro Leisure Centre on Friday 23 February 2024 from 3pm - 6pm. This is to mark World Roatry Day an all funds raised will be donated to the Shelterbox Urgent Gaza Appeal.
Pupils from Richard Lander, Truro High and Truro Schools participated in the Rotary Youth Speaks event at Richard Lander School on Thursday (25th January 2024).
The students debated a variety of topics including AI - can it ever be as emotionally intelligent as a human being? to Environmental Campaigning should focus on changing government policy rather than individual behaviours. Fourteen students took part in five teams in both senior and intermediate categories. Truro High School won the Intermediate leg and Truro School , the Senior Competition. All of the participants will go through to the area competition which will take place in Camborne in March with a chance to go on ultimately to a national final. The event was organised by Cathie Shipwright of Rotary Truro Evolution Club with support from members of Evolution and other rotary clubs, friends and former teachers who acted as adjudicators, questioners and time keepers. Prize certificates were awarded by Jackie Southon, President of Rotary Evolution. We intend to run further events in the future. One of our members Rosemary, has been busy knitting these delightful trauma teddies - they will soon be on their way to Ukraine to be loved and cuddled by children whose lives continue to be disrupted by the conflict there.
We spent two days in Truro fundraising for outreach paramedics and were delighted to be joined by Oxana paramedic from Ukraine.
We have started testing the water quality of the River Kenwyn. This is a project we are running with the Friends of Goosebean for the Westcountry Rivers Trust Citizen Science Investigators Initiative.
We started by surveying the river at three points and submitting the data gathered to the information database. Once we receive our water quality testing kit we will be able to monitor the river on a regular basis. We collected items ranging from dog toys to beer bottles when we joined Paul Caruana for a litter pick at Boscawen Park, Truro yesterday.
Cathie Shipwright made a delivery to the Callington base of the local charity Cornwall and Devon sending love to Ukraine. These items will arrive in time for Christmas.
Jackie Southon, President, joined 90 other volunteers on a sleep out at the Eden Project. Jackie raised £300 for St Petroc's. We heard from the Royal British Legion that £6500 had been raised through the Poppy Appeal. We were very pleased to support them with their collections in Sainsbury's. Evolution ramblers enjoyed a blustery walk at Carn Brea followed by Sunday Roast at the local pub. President Jackie Southon and member John Ball are representing the Rotary Club of Truro Evolution at the Royal British Legion Service of Remembrance in Truro Cathedral on Sunday 12 November 2023.
