Our club were delighted to be able to visit the RNLI lifeboat station in Falmouth. Not only that, we got to alight the boat and get a real feel for what it could be like to be part of the crew.
All of them are volunteers, most of whom are living within a ten-minute radius of the station. Responding quickly to any call out, and leaving office desks, classrooms or whatever walk of life they come from, this motley crew of dedicated and brave men and women assemble, ready to be assigned a task. Even if they don't go out on a shout, they will form a back-up support crew. In 2021, the Falmouth lifeboat responded to over 100 calls, which included life-saving efforts as well towing in yachts that had found themselves in difficulty. Surrounded by sea, it is essential that Cornwall maintains this service, yet we were surprised to hear that every aspect of this mission to save lives at sea, is funded solely by public donations. |
People of ActionOur club meets officially once a month but at other times in the month we meet as Rotarians, all with one focus - ‘working for the community.’ We find ourselves working on various fundraisers, exciting projects and arranging interesting socials.
We utilise individual skills from each member to get a project done. It’s important to us that everyone has relatively equal status whilst recognising individual skills within the group, giving what time they can. Help wanted??? ... or maybe you want to help!
